This work was commissioned by Sunderland City Council, who were concerned that wind effects in the new Park Lane Transport Interchange should not be uncomfortable for passengers. PHOENICS was used to predict wind velocities beneath the bus station canopy, both with and without protective screens.
Contours of velocity magnitude, and streamlines, are shown for each case. The shelter provided by the screen is evident. Even when the screen is on the downwind side, the blockage effect still provides some shelter upwind of the screen.
